A Tribute To Travel Bloggers’ Instagram Husbands

Have you ever had to push yourself against a hotel room door, hiding in the corner whilst holding multiple items of luggage, as your other half conducts a mini photo shoot in the room you’ve just checked into?

Or maybe you’ve  yourself surrounded by more dishes than 2 people could possibly eat – dishes that were ordered according to how they looked rather than what you fancied?

If this sounds familiar then you my dear man (or woman) are probably a travel blogger’s Instagram Husband.

In addition to symptoms demonstrated by general Instagram Husbands, such as the calloused photo thumb and uncontrollable bodily twitches upon mention of the words: selfie, brick wall, puppy or succulent, the travel blogger’s Instagram Hubby is susceptible to flat lays around the world and holiday activities selected purely on the basis of their social media boastability.

For my latest assignment for Skyscanner Australia they asked me to write a tongue-in-cheek guide for Instagram Husbands travelling with their partners and boy did I have a lot of material. My long-suffering Instagram Hubby has been through a training course of sorts, whereby he is made to repeatedly take photos until he captures the exact shot I had in my head but could not explain properly.

He’s learnt to hold the phone high lest he shows the world my double chins and has kept his cool when I rearranged furniture or sneakily tried to stand on it in order to take the perfect flat lay in various locations, including first class lounges.

He’s reluctantly been the model in my photos, just so I can show him exactly what I want him to recreate with me in it, and has been the poor figure mentioned at the start of this post – forbidden to touch a single item in the hotel room, not even the toilet, until I’d finished photographing every inch of it.

When I reached out to the lovely ladies of the Girl versus Globe Facebook group to see what they had put their Instagram Husbands through it seems I was not alone in this. Confessions included getting hubby to hold onto chairs and hold back hair as photos were taken from above and requiring them to take multiple photos of the same thing, in various formats, in order for the images to be in the right dimensions for every social media platform.

Absolutely loved this pic that was submitted on Facebook!

So it occurred to me that not only do these men behind the lens need tips for how to travel with us but they need to be celebrated too. To my new Instagram Husband I say thanks for your unwavering patience. I will forever more credit you when you nail a shot and let you bask in the fame of Insta likes that roll in with me. I also promise to take holidays with you that aren’t a never-ending photo shoot although, obviously, if you’re joining me on a press trip then that comes with the territory. Thanks for putting up with me!

  1. This is absolutely hilarious! I don’t have an Instagram husband, but more like Instagram friends and Instagram family (and occasionally Instagram 7 year old nieces) 🙂

    • Haha I definitely think the term Instagram Husband covers a number of relationships – including mothers, nieces and strangers you roped into helping out!

  2. Love this! Very true for the Food Blogger Husband, who knows he’s not allowed to touch a morsel of his food until it’s been photographed, and sometimes tolerates his wife standing on top of furniture to get the perfect shot…

  3. I have this video bookmarked as it makes me laugh so much! Coincidentally I was watching it again a few nights ago and my own Instagram husband agrees that this is totally his life! Bless our hubbies and what we put them through – but I know deep down he loves hiding behind the hotel room door after an 11 hour flight! 😉

    • Haha that was the bit that Justin related to the most! I hate asking him to hide but you’ve got to get those shots in before unpacking luggage carnage right?!

And so so true… the amount of bottle shots I do for GreatDrams… Kirst and I cannot even go to supermarkets anymore (her rule) as I take took long looking at new packaging and new product releases… I’m given 20 mins whilst she does the shopping then f I’m not at the front she leaves… yep.

  5. Oh my poor mister has just conceded now, so much so that he’s embracing it! I’ll use the phrase ‘can you just be an instagram husband for a minute’ as we’re standing anywhere remotely stunning, and he’s on it. But we both agreed the food photos are the hardest to wait on 🙂 Thanks for this, I’ll share it with him so he know he’s not alone, bless ’em.

  6. This is great. My new husband got irritated with me when I was complaining about my chins in the photo he took this weekend. I told him to get used to it, and that it is all in the name of my one-day business. I am not sure he was assured. 🙂

  7. Tears rolling down my face I’m laughing so hard here…but only because it’s true! My 15 year old son said “Yep, that’s you. I hope you know that” on more than one spot in the video. He thinks he’s my Instagram Kid. My poor guys. Oh well. They are used to it now! 🙂

  8. I don’t have a husband but I think I will keep this post for the future and if there is a prospect will make him read it so he has been fairly warned 😉
