There’s something about Bondi. It has its own magnetic pull. Ever since that first morning we arrived in Sydney, too early to collect the keys to our rental apartment, we took off in the rental car instead. To the city’s most iconic beach, our lives squeezed into 6 suitcases in the boot and backseat. Not daring to abandon all our worldly possessions for the pursuit of a hot drink, we sat in the car, watching surfers arrive to catch the first break of the day, shops roll up shutters ready for trade. We soaked in the scene and had no doubts about the massive move to the other side of the world, we had just that morning made.
Three months later we’ve felt ourselves drawn back to Bondi Beach on several occasions. By no means Sydney’s best or most beautiful beach, it still has something about it that can’t keep us away. Something which draws tourists in by the truckload and leaves locals declaring their heart belongs here.
I hope these pictures taken over the last few ‘wintry’ weeks give you a little taste of that Bondi magic.
Do you think there is something special about Bondi? Can you help me name it?!
I’ve always found Bondi strange when I have visited. You are right that there are more beautiful beaches, but there definitely is a certain something about Bondi.
The Bondi-Coogee walk is just magnificent.
Agreed! Love doing that walk and enjoying a cold drink at the end.
Hi Jayne,
How I envy you – thinking about arriving in Australia to live and sitting at Bondi. What a dream. Bondi to me typifies Australia in an English mind. The swells the surfers, the lifeguards. I thought I was going to hate it. Instead fell in love with it and Australia a little more. What is it about this country!
I know!! Surprised me too.
I can’t put a name to it either, but I understand the pull! I stayed with a friend who lived near Bondi Junction on my very first trip to Sydney, so I always attributed it to the nostalgia of that being the very first major landmark site I ever visited in Australia. It was surreal actually putting my toes in the sand there. And that feeling sort of sticks. Not sure if there’s an actual word for that, but there should be!
Sounds like we had very similar first moments in Oz!
Really want to visit Bondi!

I love Bondi too, there just is something about it – I know what you mean. Have you seen Aqua Bumps an amazing collection of photos of Bondi at sunrise, they’ll have you falling even more in love.
I haven’t – I shall look them up. I’ve been eyeing up some gorgeous Bondi photography that they sell at the Sunday markets. Think one would make a nice addition the flat!
<3 Bondi Beach! Can't wait to go back there in January! Apart from the perfect beach setting and awesome wild/ tame swimming pool I also love that you can have a wonderful walk all along the coast and even spot some whales if you're lucky =)
I haven’t spotted any whales yet – shall have to keep my eyes peeled!
