Sydney Shopping Secrets

London, Milan, Paris, New York.. Sydney?

Sydney is not often a name you see bandied about as a fashion or shopping capitol but over the past year the shopaholic in me has found much satisfaction in the malls, markets and boutiques of this scenic city.

Just like I used to in London I go to different parts of Sydney when looking for different types of fashion.

The CBD is where I head to when I want to shop the best of local and international high street brands. Pitt Street is home to familiar names (for me) like Topshop, Zara and most recently H&M. H&M’s sister store Cos is set to open later this year and there are even rumours that we’ll be getting our own Marks & Spencers (I live in hope!). Westfield is fantastic for luxury brands as well as high quality fast food and the Strand Arcade and Queen Victoria Building are where I go when I want to shop in grand, historic settings.

For vintage or quirky items I head to the Inner West. King Street in Newtown is fab for vintage shops as well as vibrant street art and in Glebe you’ll find Sydney’s largest second-hand market – it’s a bit like a car boot sale where you have to rummage for the good stuff.

Sydney has a whole host of weekend markets where you can shop whilst sampling local produce and admiring the scenery. Bondi, Paddington and Eveleigh are my favourite.

I’ve also started to fall for silky dresses by Australian designers such as Camilla who makes the most incredible beaded kaftans.

  1. hi, i love your website and i’m wondering if you could advice me on whether it is a better choice to stay in surry hills or newtown in sydney. it will be my first time in sydney and i love cafes and vintage shopping.

    • Thanks S! They are both great places to stay if you like cafes and vintage shopping. Surry Hills has lots of great cafes and bars and is a little closer to the city so tends to be slightly more expensive than Newtown. Newtown is great for vintage and antique shopping, as well as cafes and street art and you can find some cool places to stay there. Newtown is a slightly more colourful area than Surry Hills – it has a grungier/student vibe – but comes with easy train access to central and Circular Quay. I hope this helps! They’re both a great choice.

PS if you like cafes and shopping and I have a Sydney ebook with heaps of tips in it! You can find it here http://www.amazon.com/Girl-Tweets-World-Guide-Sydney-ebook/dp/B00XE4QFVC/ref=zg_bs_67567_13
