I’ve been getting around the brunch block a fair bit in Brunswick since moving to the neighbourhood and wanted to start making a note of all the places I dig. I’ll keep adding to the list as and when I come across more good stuff but here’s what’s hitting my brunch spot at the moment.
Wide Open Road
Wide Open Road took something that was ‘Not Quite Right’ and turned into some really, really good. For those wondering if I’ve lost my marbles, the previous tenants of the John Palermo building in Brunswick was NQR (or Not Quite Right) who sold grocery products that were close to their expiry date. There’s a nice nod to that past with a shopping trolley attached to the wall of this industrial chic cafe. The food is as good as the brew (beans are roasted on site), with the Avocado, Pea and Goats Feta Smash filling a hole in my life I didn’t know existed.
274 Barkly St, Brunswick
Lux Foundry
Located in a heritage building (an old iron foundry – hence the name) Lux Foundry has the warehouse conversion down pat – just look at that exposed brick! They also have a generous amount of outdoor seating that’s perfect for sunny mornings and serve tasty coffee by Proud Mary. It’s the Brioche French Toast with espresso mascarpone, dark chocolate crumb, poached spiced pear, fresh berries and salted toffee that totally stole my heart though. Do you blame me?
21 Hope St, Brunswick
Code Black
Possibly my favourite warehouse conversion in Brunswick, Code Black appears all mean and moody with its black walls, polished concrete floors and seriously hard to open sliding door but the atmosphere, created by both staff and customers, is kind and cosy. Code Black also roast their own coffee on site and the smell from the equipment at the back is intoxicating. (We buy the beans for our Breville from Code Black and I love the scent they give my shopping bag. Anyway..) Although I’ve caffeinated here often I’m yet to try the food BUT there are some homemade crumpets and chocolate waffles with my name all over them so watch this space for updates.
15-17 Weston St, Brunswick
Small Axe Kitchen
I’m not joking when I say that the decision to rent our current Brunswick abode was 100% influenced by the Breakfast Focaccia at Small Axe Kitchen. I hit this joint for a latte on a daily basis and the struggle to resist their ginormous freshly baked chocolate croissants is real. They also have a Sicilian Orange Cake that’s on my brucket list. ( A bucket list for brunches that I totally just made up this second.) Don’t be deceived by the small in this cafe’s name, they have a cosy seating area out the back where they often hold pop-up dinners, as well seats and a sound system down the side of the building.
281 Victoria St, Brunswick
The best of the rest:
Ray’s Cafe – 332 Victoria St – great vegan dishes and proper good cake
Mr Feed – 446 Sydney Road – brand new and still finding their feet. Do a decent BLAT
Dood328 – 328 Victoria St – the least hipster cafe in Brunswick. Do decent basic b*tch style breakfast, salads and sangas
Foxtrot Charlie – 359 Sydney Rd – I wanted to love this place, mainly as they have a model airplane on the ceiling, but the warm breakfast crumble I ordered was a little underwhelming.
So that’s my brunch experience in Brunswick so far. Got anywhere I should add to my list?
