We recently enjoyed a family holiday in the Dordogne Valley and were really impressed with how engaging all the historical and cultural sites were for children.

Not only that, we also discovered a number of options for family-friendly accommodation in the Dordogne Valley that were unique, memorable and catered for every taste and budget.

Whether you are seeking a stylish boutique hotel experience or a whimsical adventure in a treehouse, this list of best places to stay with kids in the Dordogne Valley has you covered.

Cabanes Perchées Dans Les Arbres, Monpazier

We had such a memorable stay at this whimsical yet cosy treehouse hidden in a forest just outside medieval Monpazier.

They have 6 different types of treehouse at Cabanes Perchées Dans Les Arbres, including a family cabin with bunk beds for up to 2 adults and 2 children.

We stayed in Perigord, which has just the one double bed on a mezzanine, but they added a sleeping bag for Miles so he could sleep upstairs with us and he enjoyed the camping-style experience.

The whole treehouse was super warm and cosy and we slept well in the complete silence.

The real highlight of our stay, however, came the next morning while we were happily soaking in the private hot tub overlooking the treetops and breakfast was delivered to our perch 7 feet up thanks to a rope and pulley system!

A continental breakfast is included as part of your stay and it was such a luxury not having to go anywhere for it. Miles absolutely loved seeing the basket full of goodies getting hauled into the air, and the fresh baguette, juice and croissants that were delivered were absolutely delicious.

You can also have a 3-course dinner delivered to the treehouse and we had a wonderfully relaxed evening meal of local specialities including foie gras and duck confit (with a salad and burger option for the little ones) during the evening.

Prices for the treehouses start from €140.00/night without a hot tub and €210.00/night with a hot tub for 2 people including breakfast.

I think it’s such a memorable place to stay in the heart of the Dordogne Valley and is perfect for cosy autumnal vibes in the off-season.

Maison Borrèze, Souillac

This recently opened boutique hotel in the heart of charming Souillac combines chic design with personalised service.

Not only boasting a convenient location close to Brive Airport, Maison Borrèze offers a unique blend of architectural styles that contrasts strikingly with the historic surroundings.

From the rooms situated in a 100-year-old farmhouse to the bar in a cathedral-style loft that evokes the glamour of the 1930s – this is a hotel that stands out from the crowd, in a good way.

The pool area, in particular, looks like an absolute vibe and I’m dying to come back here in summer and lounge by it.

Each of the 15 perfectly appointed suites also blend art décor design with modern comforts.

I loved the choice of wallpaper and tiles but appreciated the quality of bedding on the sumptuous beds even more. (Honestly it was the best night’s sleep ever!)

This is a hotel that has truly considered comfort as well as style and that applies to families too. Children are not just tolerated here but are treated like mini VIPs. In our gorgeous private terrace room Miles was welcomed with handmade gifts, a soft robe and slippers and Petit Prince toiletries.

For younger children you can request any equipment you might need, including bottle warmers, baby bathtubs and cots.

The restaurant were fantastic at catering to Miles too. In lieu of a fixed children’s menu the chef came out and chatted to Miles about his favourite foods and then whipped them up upon request.

Everything we ate was exquisite, immaculately presented and the meal was full of little surprises from amuse-bouches to chocolate lollipops.

Breakfast the next morning was also an incredible feast that just kept getting better and better. We ate so well, slept like babies and every one of us was treated so kindly – what a true luxury stay for the whole family.

Family terrace suites start from  €213 per night for 4 people and I think it’s great value for such luxury.

La Roulotte at Domaine du Breuil, Brive

This tiny boho caravan in a leafy garden close to Brive is a really fun and affordable stay for families that surprisingly sleeps up to 2 adults and 2 children.

Like a brightly coloured tardis, La Roulotte at Domaine du Breuil has a bunk room and en suite bathroom hidden in the back, plus a little table and small amount of storage in the main bedroom area.

There’s a lovely amount of private space out the front of the roulette but you can also make use of the shared facilities including a pool and jacuzzi in the adjoining farmhouse, which is also the home of the friendly hosts Gérard and Michelle whom you’ll meet at breakfast.

Our breakfast was served in the farmhouse on a shared table with other guests. It was a delicious spread of fruit, bread, crepes and home-made jams and we enjoyed attempting to make conversation with other guests while tucking in.

This stay evoked childhood memories of simpler holidays in B&Bs 30 years ago and it’s lovely to know places like this still exist, especially so close to a bustling historic city like Brive.

The price for this friendly and memorable experience is excellent value. Rates depend on the number of guests but start from just €65 for one person, €85 for 2 people, €110 for 3 and €135 for 4.

Hotel Le Renoir, Sarlat

Image thanks to Hotel Le Renoir

I don’t have many pictures of this last property as we arrived after dark and left very early but I wanted to recommend Hotel Le Renoir for an authentic stay in the centre of medieval Sarlat.

Found in a former distillery, Hotel Le Renoir is a historic hotel with pool where we stayed in a generous 2-storey family room that had a lovely modern bathroom.

I think this hotel would be a great place to stay in summer when you can enjoy the pool surrounded by grand Italian-style architecture and all the huge windows that overlook it.

Location-wise, you couldn’t get much better for exploring Sarlat, which is a must-visit place for foodies coming to the Dordogne Valley. Filled with artisan produce shops and famed for its farmers market, Sarlat is the perfect place to try regional specialities like foie gras and truffles and you can do all of that on foot from Hotel Le Renoir.

Rooms at Hotel Le Renoir start from just 86 per night.
