Quirky accommodation in Melbourne and Victoria
Notel
If you thought rooftops were just for bars you don’t know Melbourne!
Notel is not a hotel (geddit?) but, in fact, 6 airstream trailers on the rooftop of a car park in Melbourne CBD that you can sleep in.
Chicly decked out in hues of grey and pink, the airstreams come with en suite bathrooms, a virtual concierge, Netflix loaded on an iPad and a fridge stocked with complimentary craft beer, snacks and bubbles.
If you’re looking to go all out, check into the Airstream With Benefits, which has a secluded, neon-lit hot tub overlooking Melbourne’s laneways.
Shacky
For a more off-the-grid experience, check into one of Shacky’s tiny houses that are hidden in 3 rural locations across Victoria.
Found in stunning remote locations such as an Olive Grove in Victoria’s High Country and a cattle farm in the Yarra Valley, the Shacky is a sustainable timber tiny house complete with en suite bathroom, bbq and solar power, among other comforts and amenities.
The Shackys are designed to immerse the guest in nature (just look at the views from those floor to ceiling windows), but come with a friendly welcome from the hosts who can grab some locally made produce for you to whip up dinner with.
Bimbadeen Farm Retreat, Phillip Island
Another place to get (comfortably) close to nature is at Bimbadeen Farm Retreat on Phillip Island.
Bimbadeen have 3 self-contained units for hire on its 340-acre cattle farm, where just the cows and a couple of alpacas are your neighbours.
There’s a fully functioning kitchen in the retreat and lots of delicious local produce in the farm shop, so you can self-cater to your heart’s content.
You can also join one of the daily farm tours to meet the chooks and find out more about life on a working farm.

Is it worth visiting the Penguin Parade on Phillip Island?
Retro Caravan, Mornington Peninsula
The most old-school accommodation you’ll find on this list is on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula, 90 minutes drive from Melbourne.
At Kanasta Caravan Park in Rye you can turn back the clock with a stay in a retro caravan.
Each of the ‘glampervans’ has a unique theme/colour scheme dedicated to bygone days – like this sunny yellow one we stayed in.
The caravan park itself has a few retro quirks, including a games room complete with pinball machine and original baby pink shower block.

Glamping at Balgownie Estate, Bendigo
How would you like to spend the night in a vineyard? Saves arguing over who is driving home doesn’t it?
At Balgownie Estate in Bendigo you can experience glamping in a vineyard by checking into one of their 15 luxury tents that come complete with air-conditioning, minibars and some very on trend rattan furniture!
Each luxury Bell Tent also has its own outdoor deck overlooking the vines and bushland – the perfect place to sip a Cab Sav at sunset amiright?
